First Single Player Hero Bio Revealed!!

Jim Raynor, well known Terran hero from the original Starcraft, returns as the main character in the Terran single player storyline. Quick background summary, Raynor had been positioned as a Confederate marshal on Mar Sara when the Zerg made their presence known on this world. He fought valiantly, but was however arrested by the Confederacy on charges of treason and destruction of Confederate property. What really happened, but they failed to realize was that the Station had been infested by the Zerg. He was then freed when the rebel, Arcturus Mengsk and his revolutionary group, the Sons of Korhal swept through the area fighting the Confederates, and he agreed to join them.

He soon realized that Mengsk was a power hungry tyrant who could care less about anyone but himself, be it friend or foe. He betrayed his trusted lieutenant Sarah Kerrigan who Raynor had grown very close to, and instead of rescuing her, he left her at the hands of the Zerg. Raynor attempted to rescue her, but was unsuccessful. However, in the process, he met up with the Protoss and created a friendship with Executor Tassadar and the Dark Templar Zeratul, well known Protoss heroes throughout the original Starcraft campaign.

Raynor now fights at the head of a rebel squad against Mengsk’s Terran Dominion, who are now the primary Terran force. However, his movement is only marginally effective as he has a very limited budget, while the Dominion has unlimited resources at their disposal. He has been losing faith in his mission and his vision of defeating the tyrant, and has resorted to alcoholism to cope with what he perceives as his failure of a life, between not being able to combat the Dominion effectively as well as losing Kerrigan to the Zerg. However, his trusted first officer, Matt Horner, is more than willing to step up and support/continue the work of his leader/hero, Raynor. It will be interesting to see if he can overcome his self doubt/depression to become the great man that he once was.

For those of you who love DotA (Defense of the Ancients), and are concerned about losing your favorite custom game because Starcraft 2 is not hero based, have no fear, as Blizzard recently cleared up these issues. They have made many innovative changes and upgrades to the map editor, allowing for heroes to be implemented into custom games and gain experience as well as carry items similar to Warcraft 3.

Basically, heroes will be available in custom games through the map editor, they are also part of the single player storyline. However, they will not be implemented into multiplayer ladder competition. This was an excellent choice by Blizzard, as some companies change their sequels too much, completely destroying the original game-play feel to the dismay of much of their fan base.

For example, Terran players will be using Jim Raynor as their main character, and for each mission they will return to their “Star Map” and check out their options for where to go next. This allows players to now plot their own path of exploration and storyline advancement rather than having to follow the previous linear, unalterable storyline which should add a cool new feel giving us something new and exciting to look forward to in the world of RTS gaming.
